Most welders on the market today are Arc Welders. An Arc Welder uses an arc of electricity to melt metals by connecting an electrode to the base material. Because an Arc Welder is inexpensive to run, it is a popular type of welder among both professionals and amateurs. Also named a Stick Welder.
An MIG welder, or metal inert gas welder, is a type of arc welder that uses a continuously fed consumable wire as both the electrode and the filler metal. An inert, or semi-inert, gas is released around the wire, to shield the weld site. It is commonly used to weld steels, and non-ferrous materials such as aluminum. Although it works quickly and produces welds of high quality, an MIG welder is a complex tool and not as portable as some other models. Additionally, it is not built for outdoor use, as the shielding gasses may be blown away by wind. Although MIG welders are great for beginners, more automated, easier to learn on. Some professionals will not use anything else for certain welds!
Another common type of arc welder is the TIG welder, or tungsten inert gas welder. While MIG welding uses a consumable electrode, TIG welding is non-consumable. TIG welders use a tungsten electrode, an inert or semi-inert shielding gas, and a separate filler material. A TIG welder has a remarkably stable arc, and great precision. It is often used to weld thin materials that need close attention to detail, although it is very versatile and it can be used on most materials that can be welded. A TIG welder, however, can be hard to control and requires a high level of expertise to use properly. Not to discourage you, this is a great machine with a remarkably stable arc, and great precision, with some practice there is enjoyment and contentment.
A MultiProcess Welder is a welder that combines the functions of a TIG Welder, Stick Welder and Plasma Cutter. These offer the best of all worlds, and are a good option for those who need the most versatility possible.
